The Graded Irish Draught stallion Sandy’s Light joined the resident stallions at Langaller Farm in 2008 we are pleased to introduce him to you today. He is truly an outstanding representative of the breed being both short-coupled and deep with exceptional limbs and feet. He has a very good hind leg and an exceptional foreleg and a mile of front. He possesses very straight, loose movement on the flat and has a real ‘snap’ over a fence. Many breeders are now recognising the value of the good ‘old fashioned’ Thoroughbred / Irish Draught crossbreds and the market is definitely returning for this stamp of youngster. When used on smaller mares even as small as 14.2hh the Draught influence will add substance and size coupled with an even temperament. Many of the top Show and Working Cobs are achieved when the Irish Draught is crossed with some of the larger native mares.
Sandy is the richest Liver Chesnut, almost ‘red’ in fact with just two small white socks and a narrow blaze. He is the epitome of the old fashioned quality heavyweight. As you would expect from his breeding he has an amazing temperament and is very easy to handle and polite in his attitude. He loves his time in field returning to the yard with a very thick layer of Devon mud!
For the purebred enthusiast he has a pedigree that contains a wealth of leading names and families including Skippy, Western Pride, Colman and Legaun Prince. Standing at 16.3hh+ and with 10” of bone he is the perfect partner for the lighter framed Thoroughbred and part-bred mares whilst his quality ensures the match on the stronger or pure-bred Irish Draught mares. Not surprisingly he has already sired County winning foals and hunter and sports horse youngstock.
In his first season in Devon he covered a good book of mares and reassuringly attracted a good number of pure-bred Irish Draught mares as well as the usual clutch of Thoroughbred mares. To date no-one has come to see him without booking their mare to him straight away. We covered 3 of our own mares with him and reluctantly all 3 have been sold on the strength of their now imminent Sandy’s Light foals.
You can see for yourselves just what an eyeful of a horse he is. Do come and meet him in person !
